Every year we make a spiritual pilgrimage to a stretch of coast just north of Whitby called Sandsend. The purity of the air and the clarity of the light and colour along this expanse of sand is almost cleansing. The harbour wall of Whitby can be seen in the distance, along with the ruins of the 13th century abbey on the headland above where, centuries ago, others would set out on pilgrimage too. I hope this painting captures the serenity I feel when I visit this beautiful part of the North Yorkshire coast.
