An abstract painting inspired by the Japanese Garden at Cowden Park, near Sterling, in Scotland. The central lake of the Garden is created as a block of blue containing the carefully placed rocks found in Japanese garden design. The symbolic bridges that cross the lake a stylistically rendered at the top of the blue block.

‘Flow’ was a self-created commission for a friend’s 60th birthday present. I was inspired to paint it to reflects the serenity I felt when walking around the ornamental lake of the Japanese Garden at Cowden, a country estate north east of Sterling, in Scotland. I hoped the painting would impart that same feeling of serenity for my friend.

The title comes from the flowing lines in the artwork, which travel across the water in the style of a Zen garden’s meditative pattern of raked gravel. The freehand lines were created in a state of deep relaxation and focus, with a result that imparts the same quality of calmness I felt during the painting. The lines symbolise life’s path, never straight, but bending to the circumstances that face us, be they good or bad.

Description

Flow, and abstract Japanese landscape painting, is based on the ornamental lake at Cowden Park, near Sterling, in Fife. The painting reflects the calmness I felt around it.

The painting is full of symbolism, combining those created by the Japanese garden architect herself, in the way she placed the stones in the water, and the bridges you walk across, to the sinuous curved lines travelling down the painting that are my expression of life’s journey, that also reflectthe well known raked gravel patterns synonymous with Japanese culture.

The painting is signed using a Chinese seal that spells my name, in the way I sign all my abstracts.
