Description
Lily Pads and Irises is an abstract watercolour inspired by one of my go-to hangouts at my local formal garden at RHS Harlow Carr. The original artwork is for sale, and it is also available as a print.
My absolute favourite part of the Gardens at Harlow Carr, in North Yorkshire, England, is a small, slightly isolated lily pond found in the central area around the main lawns. On every visit I take myself to the bench there and just sit, taking in its tranquility. Such is its ability to calm and refresh me, it reminds me that nature is one of the best medicines. Nature is also a sublime artist. On the occasion that inspired this piece, the reflected colours of the sky and trees on the pond’s surface, combined with the oranges, reds, and purples of the dying lily pads, and the spacing of the pads across the water, created a perfect composition. The only thing that drew my eye away from the water was a swathe of Irises at the top of the pond that seemed to be a natural terminus for the line of pads.
The image size of the orginal artwork measures 61cm x 34cm on a full sheet of art paper measuring 72.5cm x 53cm. It is painted on 140lb Arches cold press watercolour paper.
