Stopping the Surge

£45.00£270.00

Beyond the harbour walls of the quaint historical fishing village of St Monans on the East Neuk of Fife lies a strangely modern looking zigzag breakwater known locally as The Blocks. The structure was designed by the great 19th century lighthouse designer Stevenson who, it is said, spent hours observing the motion of waves, better to design defences against the worst of them.

This painting shows how successful he was in his endevour. On the day of my trip to St Monans a storm blew onto the coast and it was plain to see by the calmness of water at the entrance to the harbour that the shape and engineering of the breakwater was a masterful piece of work.

This painting can be purchased as the original artwork or as a high quality, signed, giclee print.
