This cut-away illustration of the famous Pilgrim Father’s ship, the Mayflower, was commissione by Time Life Inc for their History of the World series of books.

Although the pilgrims had a bad time of it once they landed, during the voyage only one person died, but a baby was also born so the same number of pilgrims reached America as left England.

The image needed to show the design and layout of the ship and the cramped living conditions of the travellers.
